Why Public Natural Gas Matters to Our Community

This week, October 4-10, is Public Natural Gas Week. It’s a chance to recognize the value of public natural gas utilities, the employees who work in the industry and the communities they serve. At Metropolitan Utilities District, we’re proud to be part of that tradition.

M.U.D. serves more than 244,000 natural gas customers across the Omaha metro area. We’re also the fifth-largest public natural gas utility in the nation. Our size gives us the resources of a large utility, while public ownership keeps us focused on local priorities.

Revenue funds operations, maintenance, and improvements to our system. Those investments help provide safe and reliable service. Natural gas remains a dependable energy source for homes and businesses throughout our community. Customers count on it every day to warm their homes, cook their meals, heat their showers, and for other essential needs.

Our impact reaches beyond delivering natural gas. M.U.D. works with local contractors, suppliers, and financial institutions. Those partnerships help support jobs and economic activity throughout the region. Our employees live here, too. They volunteer, support community organizations, and help educate customers about natural gas safety.

Public Natural Gas Week is a reminder of what makes public utilities different: local governance, local investment, local accountability. Those principles have guided M.U.D. for generations. They continue to shape how we serve our customers every day.
