How to Restore Gas Service Safely After Flooding

If floodwater reaches any gas appliance in your home, it must be inspected and repaired or replaced before natural gas service can be restored.
Follow these steps:
- Have all gas appliances exposed to floodwater inspected by a qualified, licensed professional. This includes furnaces, water heaters, gas fireplaces, gas clothes dryers and gas stoves.
- Replace any submerged control valves. The control valve on a gas appliance is a critical safety component and must be replaced if it was underwater.
- Repair or replace any exposed components. Any gas appliance parts exposed to floodwater must be evaluated and replaced as needed to meet safety codes and manufacturer requirements.
- If your furnace was flooded but your water heater remained dry, a qualified, licensed professional can disconnect the furnace and safely cap the gas line. Once this is completed, M.U.D. may be able to restore gas service to the water heater.
Requesting service restoration
After the necessary repairs have been completed, contact Metropolitan Utilities District (M.U.D.) at 402.554.6666 to request gas service restoration.
Before restoring service, M.U.D. will verify that all equipment and gas connections meet safety requirements.
Important safety reminder
Do not attempt to reconnect, operate or restore gas service to any appliance that was exposed to floodwater.
These requirements help protect you, your family and M.U.D. employees from potential safety hazards associated with flood-damaged gas equipment.
