Infrastructure Replacement Program 2025 Progress Report
Significant progress was made in 2025 toward replacing and upgrading critical gas and water infrastructure.
Through our infrastructure replacement program, District crews replaced 2.1 miles of cast iron gas mains, and District and contracted crews replaced 15.5 miles of high-risk water mains. Additional miles were proactively inspected and assessed for future replacement needs.
Since the program’s inception in 2008, we have replaced nearly 481 miles of cast iron gas mains and replaced nearly 184 miles of high-risk water mains.
In 2025, our contracted crews began work on an additional phase of the gas infrastructure replacement program, which focuses on relocating inside gas meters to the exterior. More than 1,650 gas meters were successfully moved outside.
“Each mile we replace is an investment in a safer, more reliable system for future generations. Our 2025 progress demonstrates M.U.D.’s ongoing commitment to modernizing infrastructure and supporting the communities that rely on us,” said Derek Duin, senior infrastructure engineer.
Much of the funding for future cast iron gas main replacement work comes from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization grant program. In 2024, the District was selected to receive a $25.2 million grant to fund this work, a follow-up from the $10 million awarded in 2023.
Gas and water rates include monthly fees to provide long-term funding for the program. The District also issues bonds, as needed, to help fund infrastructure replacement.
