M.U.D. asks customers to reduce outdoor water use

M.U.D. is asking customers to reduce outdoor water use until we receive some rain.

There is adequate water for normal use, however due to the hot weather we've been having this week, the water system is operating at near capacity.

We have the capacity to pump 234 million gallons of water per day. On August 1, we pumped 200 million gallons of water and we're estimating customers will use 190 million gallons of water today, August 2.

The August 1 pumpage of 200 million gallons per day is the highest pumpageday for 2001. Last year's highest pumpage day was June 8 when we pumped 194 million gallons of water in one day. The all-time high for water pumpage was June 25, 1988 when the demand totaled 223 million gallons of water.

We are asking commercial and residential customers to reduce the amount of water they put on their lawns by watering on alternate days. This spreads out the day-to-day demand for water.

Customers also should water in the cooler part of the day to reduce evaporation, and avoid watering on windy days. Customers also can conserve water by:

  • Adjusting sprinklers to water only the lawn, and not the sidewalk orstreet.
  • Using a broom, not a hose and water, for outdoor cleaning.
  • Washing a car with a pail of soapy water and using the hose only to rinse the car.

M.U.D. provides water to more than 170,000 customer-owners in the Omaha metro area.
