M.U.D. encourages customers to use water wisely

M.U.D. customers used 194 million gallons of water on Thursday, June 8. The projection for today is 193 million gallons. The District's total pumping capacity is 234 million gallons.

The all-time high for water pumpage was June 25, 1988 when customers used 223 million gallons water.

"We encourage our customer-owners to begin watering their lawns on alternate days. It's just good water conservation management to get into the habit of using odd/even day watering," said General Manager Jerry Radek.

Water your lawn on an odd-numbered day if your address ends in an odd number. If your address ends with an even number, water on an even-numbered day.

Radek said some customers may be experiencing lower than normal water pressures due to the demand. "If our customers use water wisely, we will continue to have an adequate supply of water," said Radek.

Other water conservation tips:

  • Water early in the morning when temperatures are mild and winds are calm so less water will be lost through evaporation.
  • Avoid watering on a windy day.
  • Lawns like a leisurely soak rather than quick showers. Water once or twice a week, allowing time for the moisture to soak down to the roots (6-8 inches). Frequent watering encourages shallow root growth. Shallow root systems are more susceptible to grub damage and heat/drought stress.
  • Adjusting sprinklers to water only the lawn, and not the sidewalk or street.
  • Using a broom, not a hose and water, for outdoor cleaning.
  • Washing a car with a pail of soapy water and using the hose only to rinse the car.

The District serves more than 170,000 water customers in Omaha metro area.
