47 apply for M.U.D. board vacancy

The Metropolitan Utilities District Board of Directors received 47 applications for the vacancy created by the death of Mary Kay Begley, including Begley's son
, Jim.

The person selected to fill the vacancy will serve the remainder of Begley's term, which runs through 2012. Begley died Feb. 15.

Applicants selected for interviews will be notified by March 12.

M.U.D. directors will meet at 8:15 a.m. March 15 to name the new member.

M.U.D. officials said the higher number of applicants -- when the board had a similar vacancy to fill in 1999, 32 people applied -- is a positive. Many of the applicants said in their cover letters that they thought the utility was a well-run operation and would like to be part of it, officials said.
