M.U.D. receives preliminary grant approval to build two public compressed natural gas filling stations

The Metropolitan Utilities District has received a preliminary grant from the federal government to build two public compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations within the next two years.

The $2.3 million grant also includes:

  • Funds to buy a private fueling station for local businesses and political subdivisions.
  • Funds to buy 96 CNG vehicles.

The 96 CNG vehicles would go to M.U.D., Happy Cab, Metro Community College, a CNG leasing company and the Lincoln Airport Authority.

The District plans to finalize details of the grant in the coming weeks with the U.S. Department of Energy.

The grant is made possible by the District's participation in the Kansas City Regional Clean Cities Coalition, which received approval for nearly $15 million in CNG ventures.

M.U.D. is the only business in the State of Nebraska using CNG to fuel fleet vehicles. The District has 65 vehicles or approximately 25 percent of its fleet fueled by compressed natural gas.

During the past 10 years, these vehicles saved 2.6 million pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, and spared the U.S. from buying more than 28,000 barrels of imported oil.
