Nebraska lawmakers might not get around to debating a bill that would waive the collection of fuel taxes on compressed natural gas for five years.

The issue is worthy of discussion for Nebraska, considering the growing interest in natural gas-powered vehicles and the effort by Omaha's Metropolitan Utilities District to promote the lower cost alternative fuel.

But if not this year, then certainly next: Energy diversification is vital, and natural gas has its place in securing reduced dependence on foreign fuels.

It's appropriate for Nebraska leaders to examine our options for encouraging this goal
