Measuring a footprint
Omaha World-Herald editorial

A new Metropolitan Utilities District we site allows users to calculate their carbon footprints -- Bigfoot or mouseprint -- to figure out their effect on the nation's carbon dioxide output. Midlanders interested in reducing pollution can use the site to determine their output.

A carbon footprint, according to M.U.D., is the measure of impact that human activities have on the environment when they produce greenhouse gases. The impactis measured in units of carbon dioxide.

The M.U.D. website, http://livegreenthinkblue.com, also allows visitors to tinker with their carbon output, for instance calculating how much CO 2 would not be released if a homeowner switched from an electric furnace to, say, a gas furnace with a heat pump.

The website demonstration shows you how everyone can make a difference by just a simple change in appliances, said a company spokeswoman.

M.U.D. is the Omaha-area natural gas and water utility. The utility has devised a website that contributes to both knowledge and environmental improvement, something that could benefit many Midlanders.
