Elkhorn residents to receive 33 percent water rate reduction
The annexation of Elkhorn by the City of Omaha will bring lower water rates to Metropolitan Utilities District (M.U.D.) customers in Elkhorn.
The average residential water customer, who uses 110,000 gallons of water per year, will see their water cost drop from $292.92 to $195.28, a 33 percent rate reduction. The new rates will be reflected in April bill statements.
Elkhorn transferred its water system to M.U.D. in April 1997. “Since then, Elkhorn water customers paid one and half times the Omaha rate to cover the costs associated with the transfer,” said M.U.D. President Tom Wurtz.
“With the annexation, their water rates will be lower. In addition, the Elkhorn area ultimately will be brought into the M.U.D. boundary and residents will have the opportunity to vote for M.U.D. directors at the next election,” he said.
M.U.D. serves 191,893 water customers in Omaha, Bellevue, Bennington, Carter Lake, LaVista, Ralston, Waterloo and the Papio-Missouri Natural Resources District, which supplies water to Fort Calhoun.
