2.19.06 Elkhorn water tower will run dry this spring The Elkhorn water tower will become nothing more than a tower this spring. The Metropolitan Utilities District plans to take the white tower with a red band around it out of service in May. It will remain available for emergency service for at least a couple of years. Jon Zellars, an M.U.D. design engineer, said the tower serves as a storage facility and also helps regulate water pressure in northwest Douglas County, including Elkhorn, Waterloo and Bennington. But as of May 10, water pressure in that district will be regulated by three pump stations. About 17,000 letters will be sent to that district informing customers of the impending change. Zellars said increased demand in the area has required too much water pressure for the tower to provide. M.U.D. has scheduled a test for April 6 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Customers in that area should monitor their plumbing during that time. They might need to install a pressure reducing valve because of the increase in pressure. If M.U.D. decides it no longer needs the tower, the tower will revert to the City of Elkhorn. |
