Water system improvement for Elkhorn area Wednesday, May 10, with trial run Thursday, April 6

Click here for frequently asked questions

We will improve the way we operate the water system in the Elkhorn area to meet the water demands of our customer-owners. As a result, customers in that area may experience an increase in water pressure.

We plan to implement the system improvement on Wednesday, May 10. However, before we do, we want to give Elkhorn area customers an opportunity to evaluate their water pressure and experience the way the improved system will operate.

On Thursday, April 6, around 7 p.m., we will make adjustments which may increase the water pressure 25-35 pounds per-square-inch (psi). Around 9 p.m., the pressure will be returned to its pre-adjustment condition. We advise Elkhorn area customers to periodically look at plumbing, between 7-9 p.m. They may not notice any difference. Or, they may notice:

  • A faucet with a new drip;
  • A toilet suddenly sounds like it is running; or
  • The relief valve on your hot water heater drips or flows water.

The solution may be a new washer for the faucet, a filler valve adjustment or replacement for the toilet or a new relief valve for the hot water heater. It may mean the home or business may need a pressure reducing valve (PRV) or if one is installed, it may need to be adjusted.

Before the temporary adjustment April 6, Elkhorn area customers may want to evaluate the pressure in their home or business. A solution to managing the water pressure is to have a pressure reducing valve (PRV) installed if one already is not installed.

Local plumbing codes require the installation of a PRV where the water pressure is greater than 80 psi. The PRV should be located upstream of the water meter. A PRV controls the pressure of the water and protects fixtures, water heaters, and other water appliances. A plumber can determine if a PRV is needed.

If the home or business has a fire sprinkler system, we recommend customer-owners inform their fire sprinkler contractors of this notification. The contractor may need to make adjustments to compensate for the increase in water pressure.
