Benson main improvement project

Our contractor, Heitkamp of Watertown, CT, began work on the main improvement project in the Benson neighborhood at the end of May.

The affected area includes 5 miles of water mains from 52nd Street on the east to 62nd Street on the west; from Blondo Street on the south to Maple Street on the north.

The contractor divided the project into three phases, and anticipates it will take four to five weeks to complete each phase.

Here's the schedule for construction, however please keep in mind these time frames are based on weather-permitting conditions.

Phase 1 (began end of May)

  • 62nd St. -- from Grant to Blondo Sts.
  • 61st St. -- from Lake to Blondo Sts.
  • 56th St. -- from Miami to Blondo Sts.
  • Ohio St. -- from 56th to 60th Sts.
  • Lake St. -- from 56th to 60th Sts.
  • Erskine St. -- from 58th to 60th Sts.
  • Burdette St. -- from 58th to 60th Sts.

Phase 2 (began June 27)

  • 62nd St. -- from Maple to Grant Sts.
  • 61st St. -- from Maple to Lake Sts.
  • 60th Ave. -- from Maple to Blondo Sts.
  • Maple St. -- from 63rd to 61st Sts.
  • Miami St. -- from 63rd to 60th Sts.

(The contractor may begin Phase 3 a couple of weeks prior to completion of Phase 2).

Phase 3 (to begin on or near August 1)

  • 60th St. -- from Maple to Lake Sts.
  • 56th St. -- from Maple (NW Radial Hwy.) to Miami Sts.
  • 52nd St. -- from Maple (NW Radial Hwy.) to Blondo Sts..
  • 58th St. -- from Maple (NW Radial Hwy.) to Miami Sts.
  • Maple St. -- from 61st to 52nd Sts.
  • Corby St. -- from 60th St. to 56th Sts.
  • Miami St. -- from 60th to 56th Sts.

We anticipate crews will work 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Every effort will be made to complete the work quickly and efficiently.

However, there will be service interruptions; some scheduled in advance for short periods while the work is being done. These interruptions will be minimized as much as possible.

If we dig in a yard or remove paving, we will restore the area to its present condition at no cost to the property owner.

We periodically recondition sections of the water system to make sure customers continue to receive an adequate supply of safe drinking water. The mains in the Benson area were installed in the 1920s and 1940s. The improvement project totals approximately $1.8 million.
