Contractor to begin main improvement project in mid-May

This spring and summer, M.U.D. will continue with a $1.8 million-project to recondition approximately 5 miles of water mains in the Benson area from 52nd Street on the east to 62nd Street on the west; from Blondo Street on the south to Maple Street on the north.

Since M.U.D. does not have the specialized equipment for this project, we hired a contractor to do the work. The contractor is Heitkamp of Watertown, CT.

The contractor will begin work the middle part of May.

We periodically recondition sections of the water system to make sure customers continue to receive an adequate supply of safe drinking water. The mains in the Benson area were installed in the 1920s and 1940s.

Last summer we began the first step in this project. We inspected water service valves in the neighborhood and repaired them at no cost to the property owner. (The property owner normally is responsible for repairs to the water service.) The valves allow us to shut the service off from the main in emergencies.

We anticipate crews will work 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Every effort will be made to complete the work quickly and efficiently.

However, there will be service interruptions; some scheduled in advance for short periods while the work is being done. These interruptions will be minimized as much as possible.

If we dig in a yard or remove paving, we will restore the area to its present condition at no cost to the property owner.

We will send a letter to the 640 residents in this area before the project begins in April. In addition, we will contact residents as we move into their area. The contractor will work on an approximately 4- to 5-block area at a time.
