6.04.02 Benson area water main improvements The Metropolitan Utilities District (M.U.D.) will install approximately a half dozen fire hydrants and connect approximately 100 water services to a 16-inch water main (pipe) to improve water pressure for firefighting. These customers now are served by a 4-inch main. The project will begin in late July. The affected area is bounded by Maple St. on the north, Blondo St. on the south, 52nd St. on the east and 63rd St. on the west. We also are doing preparation work to save money on main maintenance planned for next year. We estimate spending $1.1 million for 2002-2003 water main improvements in the Benson area. Preparation for 2003 Water Main Maintenance We periodically recondition sections of the water system to make sure customers continue to receive an adequate supply of safe drinking water. The water main that delivers water to Benson neighborhood is targeted for maintenance in 2003. The first step in this project is to isolate every water service from the water main. Each water service has a valve. Valves usually are located in an area near the street. The valve allows us to shut the service off from the main. We will review the water service valves in the neighborhood. Some of the valves may need repair, ranging from cleaning the service valve box to total valve replacement. If repair is needed on the valve to your service, we will repair it this summer at no cost to you. The property owner normally is responsible for repairs to the water service. In addition, if we dig in a yard or remove paving, we will restore the area to its present condition at no cost to the property owner. As previously mentioned, some of the valves may need repair. If you do not see activity on your property, it means your water service valve works properly. Crews will work 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday. Every effort will be made to complete the work quickly and efficiently. However, there will be service interruptions; some scheduled in advance for short periods while the work is being done. These interruptions will be minimized as much as possible. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this maintenance project. |
