M.U.D. board members can get insurance
by Nancy Gaarder, Omaha World-Herald

Board members for the Metropolitan Utilities District will be able to buy health and dental insurance through the utility beginning next year.

The board voted 7-0 for the change Wednesday, which puts M.U.D. on a par with other public bodies such as the Omaha Public Power District, the City of Omaha and Douglas and Sarpy Counties.

State legislation passed two years ago made the M.U.D. change possible, said Tom Wurtz, general manager for M.U.D. The benefits will begin January 1, as mandated by the Nebraska Constitution, which prohibits a board from approving pay raises or benefits for itself during its current term.

M.U.D. provides insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield and Mutual of Omaha.

Board members earn $800 a month, with an additional $100 going to the chairman. They will have to pay a premium for their insurance, just as employees do.
