Waterloo, subdivision making switch to M.U.D.-supplied water
by Julie Anderson, Omaha World-Herald

Beginning today, Waterloo and the West Shores subdivision will receive water piped in by the Metropolitan Utilities District.

Residents should not see any disruption in service as the switch is made, said Mari Matulka, an M.U.D. spokeswoman.

The switch was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., as long as the temperature stayed above freezing. Workers planned to flush water mains and run water from hydrants.

Water from the village's two wells has deteriorated in quality over the years and, while still safe, now contains higher-than-recommended levels of iron and manganese.

The village faced drilling new wells and building a treatment plant if it wanted to improve water quality. Buying water from M.U.D. will avoid those costs and will help the village avoid paying to meet new, stricter water quality regulations.

Water from the tap may appear orange at first because of a reaction between minerals and chlorine, Matulka said. Although the water will be safe to drink, residents should allow the tap to run until the water is clear.

If it doesn't clear in a few days, she said, residents can call M.U.D. at 554-6666.

Some residents will notice that the new water supply tastes different, said Dave Henke of JEO Consulting Group in Wahoo.

Waterloo's water contains iron and manganese. M.U.D. removes the minerals and treats the water with fluoride and chlorine.

PeopleService will continue to manage the village's water system and bill residents.
